Mining transport company MLG has announced the successful refurbishment of a TK004 Kenworth known as ‘Bill’ to service.
The company-favourite truck was originally purchased in 2004 by MLG Founder Murray Leahy and was among the first road trains owned by the company.
In a nod to the company’s history as Leahy Haulage, Bill has been restored to feature the company’s original paintwork.
Bill’s legacy is not just a nod to MLG’s history in the mining transport game. The truck’s name is in honour of Private William ‘Bill’ J. Leahy, who served in World War I and lost his life in action on April 9, 1917.
Bill Leahy was the brother of current MLG Managing Director Murray Leahy’s great-grandfather Timothy.
“We thought it was only fitting we turn around and give [Bill] a full restoration,” Murray Leahy says. “We chose to brand the truck in the old Leahy Haulage look … to capture that point in time that is part of our history.
“For me, the refurbishment of this truck is about making sure we take time to remember those that have gone before us, and the efforts they put into creating opportunities for us.”
The truck was originally driven by Allan Richards who recently retired after spending over 20 years with MLG.
The refurbished TK004 is a Kenworth T908 powered by a Cummins X15 620 horsepower engine with AdBlue after-treatment ensuring it meets the latest emission standards.
The rectification work was largely carried out by Jeremy Keech and Les Harris, with all non-paint-related refurbishments completed in MLG’s Kalgoorlie maintenance facility.
City Panel Beaters and Truck Repairs restored the truck’s panelling, while MLG’s Yindi Way Workshop team also worked to return the truck to its former glory.
