The Yan Yean Road upgrade is entering its next phase, with construction on the Northern Package scheduled to begin in November, aiming to ease congestion for the 24,000 daily motorists.
The Albanese and Allan Governments have awarded the contract for the Northern Package of works to Australian-owned company Decmil, marking a key milestone in the project that will transform one of Melbourne’s busiest arterial roads.
Major construction on the Northern Package, which runs between Bridge Inn Road and Orchard Road, is scheduled to start in November, with the Southern Package set to begin in mid-2026.
Stage 2 of the Yan Yean Road upgrade will duplicate lanes from Kurrak Road to Doctors Gully Road across Yarrambat and Doreen and upgrade nine intersections to improve traffic flow and reduce travel times for the 24,000 motorists who rely on the corridor every day.
Federal Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Catherine King says the project will deliver long-term benefits to the community.
“Stage 2 of the Yan Yean Road Upgrade will ease congestion, improve safety, and connect local families to the places they need to go every day,” King says.
Victorian Transport Infrastructure Minister Gabrielle Williams says the upgrade will be a game-changer for road users.
“The second stage of the Yan Yean Road Upgrade will deliver safer, faster and more reliable journeys for families across Melbourne’s growing north-east,” Williams says.
The project will also enhance active transport options, with 11 kilometres of new walking and cycling paths to connect local communities and improve accessibility.
Federal Member for McEwen, Rob Mitchell, says the benefits will mirror those already seen from earlier works.
“We’ve seen the great time-saving that the first stage of this project has delivered, and it’s fantastic to see Stage 2 ready to commence in November,” Mitchell says.
Victorian Member for Yan Yean Lauren Kathage says the road is vital to the north’s growth.
“Melbourne’s north-east is an up-and-coming destination for young families and professionals to live in, and this upgrade will ensure they’re able to get from home to work to school and everywhere in between easier than ever,” Kathage says.
The $3.14 billion Suburban Roads Upgrades program – jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments – includes major works on Bridge Inn, Plenty, Epping, O’Herns and Childs Roads, as well as the M80 Ring Road. Of this, $1.58 billion is funded by the Australian Government, with the Victorian Government contributing $1.57 billion.
