Major Western Australian trailer changeover location to benefit from expansion and repair works
The Western Australian Government says expansion and improvement work at its Wubin changeover pad will be finished by the end of June.
A further 23 marked bays will be added to the current 36 bays, much-needed repairs and maintenance will be carried out and there will be formalised dolly parking to better utilise the existing area.
Federal and state funding to the tune of $2.5 million is involved.
“I would expect there to be very comprehensive level of service provided at Wubin for the trucks,” Main Roads Western Australia regional manager Wheatbelt Craig Manton says.
Wubin is a tiny town on the Great Northern Highway about three hours north of Perth, where double road trains are converted into triples for the long trip to the mines much further north.
The Main Roads WA changeover pad located on the main intersection in town has suffered from crowding and frayed tempers.
Pressure has been taken off recently though via Linfox completing its own $3million-plus changeover area across the road, and things are expected to improve further when work on the public site is finished.
Manton says the improved facility will really be just a “holding measure” until the aspiration of upgrading the Great Northern Highway all the way down to Muchea, on the northern edge of Perth, is achieved.
“It will be a number of years before we can get triples all the way down to Muchea,” he says.
