Work begins on new intermodal freight terminal

Work begins on the Wimmera intermodal freight terminal in Victoria

June 16, 2011

Works on the $16.75 million Wimmera intermodal freight terminal at Dooen in Victoria have started.

Transport Minister Terry Mulder says the new project is vital in maintaining the state’s competitiveness in the grain export market and is a critical element in the freight supply chain.

“The new freight terminal is critical for the Wimmera Mallee region – one of the world’s largest grain, pulse and oilseed growing regions – which exports 60 percent of its products,” he says.

Mulder says the project will also reduce transport bottlenecks and improve business competitiveness.

“The new terminal will enable the region to continue its valuable contribution to the Victorian economy,” he says.

“In keeping with the recent announcement of the continuation of the $5 million Rail Freight Support Package, the government is committed to invest in our rail infrastructure and committed to addressing the task of easing freight congestion on our roads.”

Mulder says the government will provide $8.75 million, with Canberra tipping in $6.5 million. Horsham Council and the private sector will each spen $750,000 on the project.
