Work begins on Mooloolah River Interchange Upgrade

Construction has begun on the Mooloolah River Interchange Upgrade, a major Sunshine Coast project designed to ease congestion and improve safety on the Sunshine Motorway.

The Crisafulli Government has begun construction on the long-awaited Mooloolah River Interchange Upgrade.

This major Sunshine Coast infrastructure project will ease congestion, boost safety and improve connectivity across one of Queensland’s fastest-growing regions.

The project, located near Sippy Downs, will address long-standing traffic issues on the Sunshine Motorway and provide new connections that support public transport and future growth.

Once complete, the upgrade will also enhance access for The Wave rapid transport system, strengthening the Sunshine Coast’s integrated transport network ahead of the 2032 Games.

Delivering generational infrastructure for Queensland

Premier David Crisafulli says the project marks the start of a new era of investment in Queensland’s road network.

“This is more than just a road upgrade, it’s about delivering the generational infrastructure Queensland needs for the future,” he says.

“We’re backing the Sunshine Coast with real investment, real action and a real plan to fix the transport bottlenecks that have held it back for too long.”

The Mooloolah River Interchange Upgrade includes:

  • a new road overpass from Nicklin Way to Brisbane Road at Mooloolaba
  • a local road connection between Karawatha Drive and Brisbane Road
  • duplication of the Sunshine Motorway
  • a new link road from the Sunshine Motorway to Kawana Way.

Early works are already underway, including site clearing, service relocations and geotechnical investigations. The project is expected to be completed before the 2032 Games.

Transforming the Sunshine Coast’s transport future

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jarrod Bleijie says the interchange will transform regional connectivity. “

The Mooloolah River Interchange will future-proof a critical transport link for our region,” he says. “Our government is listening to residents and delivering one of the biggest transport infrastructure funding boosts the region has ever seen.”

Transport and Main Roads Minister Brent Mickelberg says the project is a cornerstone of the government’s plan for a better-connected Queensland.

“We are delivering a strong plan for the State’s future by getting on with the job of building the roads and railways Queensland needs,” he says. “The Mooloolah River Interchange is about easing congestion, improving safety and creating a connected Sunshine Coast region that’s ready to welcome the world in 2032.”

Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson says the project will unlock one of the Sunshine Coast’s most significant transport bottlenecks.

“The MRI will deliver more efficient travel and help support the Sunshine Coast’s growing population,” she says.
