The Queensland Trucking Association paid tribute to women in trucking for International Women’s Day last week
The Queensland Trucking Association (QTA) paid tribute to women’s achievements in the trucking industry, as part of International Women’s Day last week.
QTA held a special Women’s Day event last Friday to celebrate women’s freight contributions, such as those made by QTA Trucking Industry Woman of the Year Award winner, Tracie Dickenson.
A Director and Partner of Daryl Dickenson Transport, Dickenson recently won the QTA Trucking Women of the Year award for her work in road freight.
Dickenson started Daryl Dickenson Transport with her husband Daryl Dickenson in 2001.
The company now has a 37 vehicle fleet, 62 trailers, 60 employees and 6000sq m of storage.
As part of the breakfast event, a panel of industry experts, including Dickenson (pictured, left), discussed increasing diversity in the trucking industry.
“I think it (diversity) is slowly getting there,” Dickenson says.
“We as an industry are always looking at how to fix skills shortages – obviously we want to attract youth, and women are a part of that youth.”
Also on the panel were Transpacific Industries CEO Kevin Campbell, DP World HR Advisor Nicole Holyer (pictured, right), All Purpose Transport General Manager Paul Kahlert, and Emberin Managing Director Louise Perram-Fisk.
Perram-Fisk says women are still underrepresented in traditionally male-dominated industries such as transport.
“At 12.2 percent, we still have some way to go to be comparable with Australian workforce statistics,” Perram-Fisk says
QTA Chief Executive Officer Peter Garske says Friday’s event attracted strong support from industry members who value the role of women in freight.
“Highly skilled women are to be found in all occupations in the trucking industry and associated freight task,” he says.
“They are successful forklift operators, administrative staff and managing directors.”
