PhD student Marnie Ireland has won this year’s Women in Freight, Logistics and Marine Management Scholarship, receiving $10,000 to fund her studies in freight, logistics and marine-related fields.
Ireland was announced as the winner at the Australian Logistics Council’s Annual Forum.
Minister for Roads and Ports Tim Pallas says the scholarship will help Ireland’s studies, which are focused on analysing sustainable options for freight transport logistics in rural Australia.
Ireland’s model will help users make freight and logistics decisions based on triple bottom line principles.
The government-run scholarship is intended to attract women into male-dominated industries.
“While more women are undertaking courses relevant to these industries, relatively few choose to pursue a management career path,” Pallas says.
Women currently make up less than 13 per cent of transport company managers, 12 per cent of supply and distribution managers and two percent of marine specialists.
“In order to maintain and develop these industries into the future, it is important to attract a wide field of professional, educated people – both men and women,” Pallas says.
He says the scholarship also gives women the opportunity to develop technical and business skills through studying and working in the industry.
