Wodonga transport under scrutiny

Freight situation to be probed as population grows in regional Victorian towns and planning issues become crucial

June 6, 2012

The freight network in Victoria’s town of Wodonga is under microscope as the State Government plans to boost its transport strategy.

The Government will spend $80,000 on investigating road and freight networks, public transport and industry trends.

Transport Minister Terry Mulder says the strategy will provide a holistic approach to transport and land-use planning, which would lead to a more integrated transport system.

“This will assist the Coalition Government in providing sound transport decisions and will help inform future proposals for the growths of Wodonga,” Mulder says.

Regional cities are facing a strong economic and population growth, which requires sound transport and land use strategies, he adds.

The project is part of the Department of Transport’s Transport Investing in Regions initiative, the Government says.

This
involves “the development of an integrated transport strategy which will provide the overarching framework and complement several Wodonga projects and the redevelopment of a number of strategic parcels of land in Wodonga”, including the central business area, rail bypass, Logic intermodal port, Gateway Island and the Leneva Growth area.
