Western Star uses the iPhone to help truckies

Western Star releases iPhone application to help truck drivers find rest stops, plan trips and more

May 10, 2011

Western Star Trucks is looking to make the lives of truck drivers easier and simpler with the release of an iPhone application, Truckie’s Mate, providing drivers with useful information and features.

Key among these features is one titled Accident Help that enables drivers to capture all the crucial accident information. This includes the location, the time and the damage incurred as well as witness details. Drivers can also take photos of the scene.

The driver’s truck and insurance details can be preloaded for easy retrieval.

All of the information can be stored on a file and emailed to the insurance company and anyone else needing the information when the driver returns home or to their base.

Also likely to be very popular is the Truck Stop Finder section that allows drivers to find out where – and how far – the next truck stop is from their current location. Alternatively they can check out all the truck stops along their intended route, state by state, to help them plan their next trip.

While the application does have a section catering specifically to Western Star drivers, including a locator function showing the nearest dealers and their contact details, the company says the application is intended for all drivers.

“A lot of time and extensive development work has gone into Truckie’s Mate and we’re extremely proud to be the first truck manufacturer in Australia to launch an app of this kind,” Western Star marketing manager Pat Cook says.

“No matter what truck you’re driving, we’re sure Truckie’s Mate will be an invaluable aid to all Australian truck drivers.”

The application is available for free download and installation through the online iTunes store.
