WA imposes double demerits over Easter period

Red light and mobile phone offences will attract double demerit points in Western Australia.

Drivers in Western Australia will be hit with double demerit points when caught using a mobile phone and running a red light this Easter.

Double demerits already apply to high-risk offences such as drink and drug driving, speeding and not using seatbelts.

Double demerits will be in effect over the Easter long weekend and Anzac Day, Road Safety Minister Liza Harvey says.

“We know that both running red lights and using your mobile phone while driving are linked to fatal and serious crashes,” Harvey says.

“Our clear aim is to reduce the number of road crashes on Western Australian roads.”

Harvey says there has been a 30 per cent decline in fatalities over the past five years in WA but the State still has one of the worst road tolls in the country.

“In 2014 we hope that measures such as these will reduce that toll,” she says.
