WA expands EV network into Kalgoorlie with new fast charger

WA’s EV charging network project has pushed further past the halfway point with this latest announcement

Kalgoorlie-Boulder has joined the Western Australian electric vehicle (EV) network following the opening of a 150kW fast charger and a 22kW back-up charger in the regional city.

The charger has been delivered by Australian energy company Synergy in collaboration with the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

A total of 27 chargers have now been built in the WA EV network, including in Merredin, Southern Cross and Coolgardie. The next charger in the network is slated to be opened in Margaret River.

“The opening of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder EV charger is an exciting milestone in the rollout of the WA EV network,” WA energy minister Reece Whitby says.

“The WA government’s $21 million investment in the EV network highlights our commitment to encouraging sustainable travel and reducing WA’s carbon footprint.”

Upon completion, WA’s EV network will feature 49 EV charging stations across the state that are, on average, less than 200km apart.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for Kalgoorlie to be part of what will be the biggest EV charging network in the world,” Member for Kalgoorlie Ali Kent says.

The WA government says an EV charger using its main energy grid, the South West Interconnected System, will generate close to 30 per cent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than conventional petrol vehicles.

The network is due to be completed by mid-2024.
