VTA to consider port issues at annual event

Port Outlook seminar coincides with political wrangling over the Port of Melbourne’s long term lease

As the Port of Melbourne enters a complex and not altogether certain phase, the Victorian Transport Association (VTA) is bringing stakeholders together for its annual Port Outlook seminar.

VTA CEO Peter Anderson says the July 14 event will offer an informative view and assessment of the state’s ports in 2015 and beyond.

“Over a dozen featured speakers from government, industry and regulatory groups will share their experience and stories to help freight operators improve their interactions with our ports,” he says.

The timing is coincidental but fortuitous, coming just as legislation enabling the long term lease of the Port of Melbourne is being considered by state parliament.

“For Victorian freight operators, the seminar will be especially relevant in view of [the] legislation and the inevitable impact of this on commerce and activity through that vital port.”

The seminar program covers a range of port activities and issues, including present and future infrastructure needs, the new stevedoring operation at Webb Dock, and ongoing access issues.

“We’ll conclude with a boat tour of the Port of Melbourne, allowing delegates a perspective of the ports they rarely get to see,” Anderson says.

Registration for the event, to be held at the historic pumping station at Scienceworks, is now open.
