Australian transport operators have ticked the green box more than 80 times since 2021 when the time came to choose between diesel of electric engines for their next Volvo truck.
While that’s a handy contribution to Volvo’s electric sales results, operators in Germany, the Netherlands, United States, Norway and Sweden have been more aggressive in their choices, leading the way in a total global sales result that has just tipped over the 5,000 delivery mark.
The first Volvo electric trucks arrived on the world stage in 2019 and since then, customers have travelled more than 170,000 million quieter and more environmentally friendly kilometres.
Volvo Trucks president Roger Alm says progress in the battery electric space has been positive.
“It’s rewarding to see transport companies continue to embrace the benefits with electric trucks in a variety of applications,” Alm says.
“Volvo’s battery-electric trucks are available here and now, providing our customers and transport buyers with a more sustainable alternative that makes business sense, and many of our customers are coming back to us to grow their electric fleets.”
The first Volvo electric truck to arrive in Australia was an FL model delivered to the Linfox fleet in 2021.
Across the 80 or so electric Volvo trucks working across the Australian industry now, more than one million kilometres has been travelled.
Globally, Volvo now offers eight different electric models to the market:
- Volvo FL Electric
- Volvo FE Electric
- Volvo FM Electric
- Volvo FM Low Entry
- Volvo FMX Electric
- Volvo FH Electric (International Truck of the Year 2024)
- Volvo FH Aero Electric
- Volvo VNR Electric
The Swedish giant is doing its bit to help transport reach its net-zero emissions targets by 2040 through a three-path strategy including battery-electric engines, fuel cell electric engines and combustion engines that run on renewable fuels like green hydrogen, biogas, biodiesel or HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil).
