Volvo begins sales of alternate fuel FM range

Operators using Volvo trucks have extra variant to choose from with release of a methane-burning version of the FM

July 15, 2011

Operators using Volvo trucks have an extra variant to choose from with the market release of a methane-burning version of the FM truck and prime mover.

Although not yet available in Australia, the FM MethaneDiesel, as the company brands it, could well appear on local roads if a network of refuelling sites could be established.

Unlike other gas-powered trucks that use spark ignition to begin the combustion process, the FM MethaneDiesel retains traditional compression ignition, which means it can work as well as a gas-burner as it can running on 100 percent diesel.

Compared to other gas-powered trucks, the new FM MethaneDiesel is reputed to provide efficiency gains of between 30 and 40 percent, with a corresponding anticipated 25 percent fuel saving.

Power outputs remain close to the diesel version, with the FM MethaneDiesel pushing out 460 horsepower, while the latest diesel-only version of the 13-litre six cylinder offered in Australia is now rated at 500 horsepower, with both engines meeting the latest Euro 5 exhaust emission regulations in force in both Europe and Australia.
