Viva Energy signs landmark power agreement with ACCIONA Energia

Viva Energy has signed its largest electricity and environmental certificate contract as it aims to have renewable power used at its Geelong refinery

Energy company Viva Energy has announced it has signed a new 10-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with leading renewable energy generator ACCIONA Energia to focus on renewable power.

The PPA will involve renewable electricity generated from the Mt Gellibrand Wind Farm near Colac, Victoria, with Viva Energy, as a large electricity user, supporting its ambition to reduce emissions.

The deal forms the largest electricity and environmental certificate contract completed by Viva Energy, providing power that is critical to its business operations bundled with large-scale generation certificates (LGCs).

The Mt Gellibrand Wind Farm is located around 70km from Viva Energy’s Geelong refinery, allowing Viva Energy to receive a substantial quantity of its power requirements from Acciona’s operating wind farm assets while also helping Viva to meet its group-wide emission-reduction ambitions.

Viva Energy chief business development and sustainability officer Lachlan Pfeiffer says he’s delighted to continue the long and productive relationship between Viva Energy and renewable energy assets owner and builder ACCIONA Energia.

“Viva Energy signed its first PPA agreement with ACCIONA Energia back in 2019, helping to support and establish the development of renewable energy in the Geelong region,” Pfeiffer says.

“This new agreement provides both substantial power supply and LGCs to Viva Energy, supporting our ambition to reduce scope two emissions across our various businesses as well as providing a long-term commitment to local renewable energy generation in the greater Geelong region.”

Viva Energy says, outside of this agreement, it continues to explore renewable energy sourcing opportunities across Australia.

The PPA with ACCIONA Energia is set to complement another renewable energy PPA Viva has with CleanCo Queensland, which results in power being provided for more than 100 Coles Express sites across the state.
