Victoria is the only state to respond to NatRoad's call for greater investment in rest areas
The Victorian Government has proposed greater industry involvement in developing adequate rest areas but other states are yet to come to the table.
Responding to a letter sent to it by NatRoad Chief Executive Bernie Belacic, Minister for Roads and Ports Tim Pallas says VicRoads will work with the industry to identify areas to improve facilities.
He and also called for NatRoad to suggest specific requirements for future rest stops in order for the industry to comply with incoming fatigue management laws.
However, Belacic, who wrote to all transport ministers, is still waiting for a reply from other jurisdictions.
In his response, NatRoad reports Pallas outlined the Government’s investment in rest areas, which has reached $16 million in recent years. This included areas on the Hume Highway.
“He also mentioned the construction of new rest areas on the Calder Freeway and Goulburn Valley Highway, together with parking bays in Melbourne,” a statement from NatRoad says.
