President of Women in Trucking Association to talk about skills shortages and cooperation between sectors
June 14, 2012
Skills shortages world-wide are on the agenda at next week’s Transport Women Australia’s (TWA) annual conference.
The full-day seminar called Moving with the Times will be held at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Holiday Inn and have eight sessions covered.
International speaker Ellen Voie, President of Women in Trucking Association in the US, will speak on skills shortages and sectors working together.
She was invited to speak by TWA’s Chairwoman Pam McMillan who felt the relationship would benefit both organisations.
Voie will provide an international perspective and highlight the success of her association where women make 5 percent of the driving population, McMillan says.
“Australia, which has approximately 400,000 heavy trucks, is a more rugged environment for women who choose trucking as a career,” McMillan says.
TWA was formed in 2000 to promote the contribution women make to the industry and to reflect their input in transport related issues.
It offers scholarships and seminars and conducts research to benefit small trucking operations.
The group also meets with government officials to promote transportation development across Australia.
