Upgrade to truck rest area in Victoria on the way

Rest area at Glenrowan on the Hume Highway will receive a makeover.

More parking spots and new toilet facilities will be added to a heavy vehicle rest area on the Hume Highway in Victoria as part of an almost $2 million investment.

The site at Glenrowan on the northbound carriageway of the Hume is due to receive a facelift from early next year after surveys found it was not up to standard.

The Federal and Victorian governments have signed off on $1.8 million in upgrades to improve driver safety and cater for increased use.

“The Glenrowan truck parking area currently has the capacity for all-weather parking for eight trucks as well as toilets, lighting and two picnic tables,” federal infrastructure minister Warren Truss says.

“Night-time surveys found this location has insufficient capacity, with trucks parking outside the designated spaces during the night, creating potential road safety hazards within the site.

“The upgrade will involve widening the existing truck stop to expand capacity, creating new bays for B-doubles and providing new toilet facilities.”

State MP for Murray Valley Tim McCurdy, whose electorate includes the Hume Highway, says the upgrade is based on feedback from road safety groups and trucking representatives.

The project is being funded under the Road Freight Initiatives Program, which is made up of $60 million from the Federal Government and $20 million from the Victorian Government.
