With regulations on drivers using hand-held devices getting tougher all the time, UD Trucks is expected to introduce Bluetooth technology to its range of trucks in 2011.
While company sources remain tight-lipped on the exact nature of any cab upgrades as part of the move to ADR80/03-compliant trucks for 2011, it is understood cab interiors are under review.
With competitor Isuzu already offering touch-screen technology including GPS and satellite navigation, UD is expected to offer some trim improvements.
However, the ‘work truck’ nature of the brand has a strong following in the market, leading to speculation any changes will be minimal.
Part of the world-wide Volvo Group, UD Trucks is set to benefit in future years from the trickle down of technology from its Swedish parent, with plans for a common engine range understood to be well advanced.
Already a prototype UD with a Volvo engine, destined for the Middle East market, has undertaken hot-weather testing in central Australia, while stablemate Mack is also preparing to use Volvo-sourced 16-litre engines, complete with SCR emission controls.
At least one Mack chassis has had the Volvo D16 engine fitted, with reports the engine fitted as well as the usual Mack powerplant.
