Smith says suggestion to investigate is based on concerns raised over the years
The Transport Workers’ Union (TWU) has justified its earlier call for an audit of Garden Grove.
TWU state secretary SA/NT branch Ian Smith says the suggestion is based on years of “legitimate concerns” regarding safety practices at the South Australian landscape supply company.
“The TWU has raised legitimate concerns about Garden Grove based on years of supporting drivers at the company who have expressed concerns and frustrations with safety practices,” Smith says.
“The recent images of safety incidents we believe highlight this problem. Our focus is on safety for drivers at the company and all individuals sharing the roads and workplaces with them.
“Garden Grove has sacked two drivers involved in these incidents but we do not believe this action tackles the root problem at the company.
“Therefore we have called for an audit of the company.”
The statement comes after South Australian Road Transport Association (SARTA) executive director Steve Shearer stated that authorities have advised him that they have “no concerns” with Garden Grove following their subsequent visit and discussions.
Shearer has also stated that SafeWork SA has informed him that it has “no intention of visiting or investigating” the company.
