Truckies share in $43k of unpaid entitlements

Tasmanian truck drivers receive a share of $43,500 in unpaid entitlements after Fair Work inspectors target regional businesses

May 17, 2011

Fair Work Ombudsman inspectors have netted more than $10,000 for two Tasmanian truck drivers as part of a compliance audit of regional businesses.

The Legana truck drivers were compensated a combined $10,200 after their employer failed to pay penalty rates and annual leave entitlements.

As part of their investigations, the inspectors recovered $43,500 for workers across Tasmania, including $20,000 for a sales assistant underpaid the minimum hourly rate and $7,700 for a forest worker who was denied overtime allowances.

Fair Work Ombudsman Executive Director Michael Campbell says each of the businesses audited have now implemented processes to ensure the underpayments do not happen again.

“We acknowledge that accidental breaches of workplace laws do occur, so our preference is always to work with employers to educate them and help them voluntarily rectify any non-compliance issues we identify,” Campbell says.
