Truckie’s ‘great job’ saves Abbott

Truck driver praised for his efforts to avoid a potentially fatal crash with Tony Abbott today

February 17, 2010

A truck driver has been praised for his efforts to avoid a potentially fatal incident with Opposition Leader Tony Abbott today.

Abbott was in the regional Victorian town of Winchelsea inspecting a segment of the Princes Highway today when his car slowed to turn into a property.

A van behind Abbott’s car pulled out suddenly, forcing the truck driver behind the vehicle to take evasive action and nearly causing the rig to jack-knife.

Media reports say the truck was about five metres away from colliding with the van and Abbott’s car and came close to turning over.

“I’ve got to say, the driver did a great job in keeping his vehicle upright,” Abbott told a press conference after the incident.

“I’m very pleased and relieved no-one was hurt.”

Abbott was there to meet Victorian Liberal candidate Sarah Henderson, who says the highway needs to be duplicated.

Abbott told the press conference a four-lane highway improves safety.
