A Victorian truck driver has been convicted and fined $8,500 for breaching fatigue management regulations by six hours.
The Ceduna Magistrates Court in South Australia convicted Terrence Michael Edwards, 54, for driving 18 hours in a 24-hour period.
Officers from the Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure in South Australia discovered the breach while monitoring Safe-T-Cam devices on March 1 when Edwards travelled from Brooklyn in Victoria to Welshpool in South Australia.
DTEI transport safety regulation director Trent Rusby says the prosecution reiterates the seriousness of fatigued drivers, particularly heavy vehicle drivers, on the roads.
“The Safe-T-Cams are in place to monitor and deter fatigued or speeding heavy vehicle drivers from our roads,” Rusby says.
“These findings support road safety measures implemented by DTEI to remove these fatigued drivers, lower the risk of road crashes and to ensure the roads are safer for all motorists.”
Dotted along sections of road network, Safe-T-Cam devices are used specifically for heavy vehicle speed and fatigue monitoring.
