The rolling over of the new year has not altered the landscape of Australia’s truck sales, with Kenworth and Isuzu continuing their recent history of market dominance over their respective categories.
New T-Mark data released by the Truck Industry Council indicates 2025 marks a new record for January sales, with the total 2786 vehicles sold surpassing the previous record set in 2023 by a solitary sale.
It also represents a three per cent increase on the 2703 trucks sold in January last year.
Isuzu has shot out to an early lead with an overall 765 sales in January, which means the manufacturer has accounted for over a quarter of all trucks sold in Australia in the year to date.
The bulk of those sales came in the light-duty sector at a total of 355 sales, with 263 medium-duty trucks and 147 heavy-duty trucks also sold.
The brand’s continued strong performance is coming ahead of a new Isuzu range launch in Australia, which will be the first time in almost two decades its range will receive such an extensive overhaul.
Kenworth has continued its form of being the go-to heavy-duty truck in Australia and accounted for 216 of the total 898 sales in the category across January.
Despite its dominance in the heavy-duty category though, Kenworth only sold the fourth-highest number of total trucks in January, with Hino and Fuso’s performance in the light and medium-duty segments enough to see them sit behind Isuzu.
Isuzu also performed strongly in the heavy-duty vehicle sector with 147 sales, with established brands Volvo, Scania and Mercedes-Benz rounding out the top five in the category.
Fiat has built on its strong finish to 2024 to loom as a potential disruptor to Australia’s established light-duty truck trio Isuzu, Fuso and Hino. Its 60 sales equalled Hino’s efforts to sit third in the segment, well behind Fuso’s 139 sales and Isuzu’s 355 sales.
Incredibly, Isuzu, Fuso and Hino were the only three brands to sell more than eight medium-duty trucks, with the trio combining to hold almost 94 per cent of the category’s market share with a total of 443 sales.
