BTS 19: Cummins Centenary

Cummins goes down memory lane - and towards a future route

It’s now 100 years since Indiana inventor Clessie Cummins kick-started a brand which would become a world leader in diesel engine development and at Brisbane this year, Cummins showcased engines from many periods in the company’s history.

The big news right now, though, is that Cummins will next year release an entire Euro 6 heavy-duty truck engine range in Australia and New Zealand.

All the engines – from the L9 (formerly ISL) to the vastly under-utilised X12 and top-shelf X15 Performance and X15 Efficiency models – will be free of EGR.

At the top of the tree, the X15 Performance version will offer ratings from 525 to 625hp and torque peaks from 1850 to 2050lb-ft while its Efficiency sibling will span the 460 to 550hp range with top torque from 1650 to 2050lb-ft.

As the for the light and lively X12, coupled at the Brisbane Truck Show to Eaton’s slick Endurant 12-speed transmission, there’s still no sign of this remarkably sprightly and frugal engine finding a truck to call ‘home’ despite immense operator interest.
