Truck driving skill recognition to increase

Proposed changes to the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ OSCA ratings would see truck driving recognised as a higher-level skill

National recognition of the qualification of Australia’s truck drivers is set to improve, with the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) set to release its new classification of the role in the upcoming OSCA release in December.

The OSCA (Occupation Standard Classification for Australia) currently places all occupations into a band of skill levels ranging from levels one to five.

Level one is the highest skill level band, with qualifications requiring a tertiary education, while level five requires you to have finished school.

Truck driving is currently classed as skill level four, which is the equivalent of holding a Certificate II or III or having one year of job experience.

The ABS has proposed the introduction f a new occupation – articulated truck driver – which would be classified at skill level three, which is the equivalent to a Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training.

The change would also see the skill level of tanker drivers recognised as a level three skill.
