Police whack driver with $2,092 fine and six demerit points after his oversized truck was detected travelling in Galston Gorge
A truck driver’s decision to take his oversized rig into Galston Gorge, north of Sydney, has cost him $2,092 and six demerit points.
NSW Police detected the 41-year-old driver on the Hornsby Heights side of the gorge on March 28 behind the wheel of a truck measuring 9.8 metres. The maximum length for trucks or car and trailer combinations is 7.5 metres.
The driver told police he had not travelled through the gorge before, but that didn’t stop authorities from issuing a hefty fine and demerit points.
NSW Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith says there are signs warning truck drivers about restrictions.
“It is not uncommon for some trucks and trailers that get stuck to have to be removed by a crane, which can shut down both sides of the gorge for many hours,” he says.
“Whilst a GPS may suggest truck drivers use the gorge as a short cut, it can cost them a significant penalty and demerit points.”
