Transurban calls for safety amid rise of dangerous goods in tunnels

Transurban has reminded heavy vehicle drivers across Australia to avoid tunnels when carrying dangerous goods

Transurban has issued a reminder to Australia’s heavy vehicle operators to ensure they avoid tunnels when transporting dangerous goods.

“Recently we’ve been noticing an increased number of vehicles carrying dangerous goods attempting to travel in WestConnex tunnels,” the road toll network manager says.

“Especially on the new Sydney Airport connection via Qantas Drive to the WestConnex M8 and M4.

“While we monitor the motorway 24/7 and can assist customers when needed, placarded vehicles are not allowed in tunnels – including WestConnex.

“These vehicles are also not permitted on roads that connect with tunnels, including the new Sydney Gateway.

“If you are travelling with any dangerous goods including petrol or paint-tin contents, please take an alternate route.”

Transurban also implored drivers in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria to check their state’s dangerous goods restrictions before travelling.
