Transport key to NT economic strategy

Bolstering transport routes and supply chain capabilities has been identified as a key pillar in the Northern Territory’s broader economic strategy

The improvement of transport links has been defined as a key pillar in the new Northern Territory ‘Rebuilding the Economy Strategy 2025-2028’.

The strategy is an action plan to drive economic growth, create jobs and restore confidence in the Territory’s future, and has defined five key improvement focuses over the three-year period.

Connecting the Territory through the improvement of infrastructure, transport links and digital connectivity has been identified as a key driver in order to continue to connect businesses and support population growth in the region.

In the strategy, the delivery of enabling infrastructure to improve supply chains and access to markets, the improvement of logistics capacity through targeted road and rail improvements, and the establishment of stronger local employment pathways have all been identified as strategic initiatives.

The report has labelled the presence of “robust infrastructure” as key to the delivery of the plan.

“The Territory’s remoteness from the rest of Australia, long distances between population centres and growing economic opportunities to our north mean being well-connected is essential for economic and population growth over the longer term,” the strategy reads.

“Robust infrastructure, supply chains and other physical and digital networks provide a backbone for businesses to operate and people to live and are important enablers for attracting investment.

“Improving road and rail transport efficiency and strategically locating warehousing and other infrastructure will improve supply chain security, benefitting business and communities and boosting employment opportunities in remote and regional areas.”

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro says the plan will help make the Northern Territory a more attractive place to live and work.

“We will actively attract skilled workers, provide incentives for families to stay, and ensure the Territory is once again a place where people want to build their future,” Finocchiaro says.

“The Northern Territory has everything it needs to succeed. Our government is determined to unlock the full potential of our industries, attract new investment, and build a more prosperous future for all Territorians.”
