Transport jobs on the rise

Latest Labourforce index reveals the sector is adding jobs across the board.

Australia’s unemployment may be at its highest level in over a decade, but there’s still positive employer sentiment in the transport and logistics sector.

The latest industry research shows the new year has seen an increase in jobs advertised, particularly in Victoria and Western Australia.

Specialist recruitment company Labourforce’s monthly labour market report shows the increase in job ads indicates a higher level of confidence among employers.

“The transport logistics and supply chain employment market enjoyed a strong start to the year, with the Labourforce Impex Job Index rising 2.8 per cent to 117.32 (indicating a 17.32 per cent rise since the survey began in January 2014),” spokesman Paul McLeay says.

“Whilst the rebound was not sufficient to catch up with the decrease in December it does signal an early return to the market for many employers.”

The January recovery was clearest in Victoria, which rose 6.4 per cent to take its local index to 139.67.

Advertised roles in Western Australia’s transport, logistics and supply chain sector rose by 4.5 per cent from December, after the index there dipped 6.4 per cent in that month.

The NSW market appears flat by comparison. At 101.22 per cent after January this year, it equates to a stagnant full year and makes NSW the weakest performing state in the index.
