Multiple have been recognised for their service to the transport sector in this year’s Australia Day Honours List, with the list headlined by Raymond Fisher’s nomination to the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his services to the road transport industry.
Fisher has served Roads Australia for well over 20 years. He sat as a Council Member from 1997-2019 and was Chair of the Fellowship Council from 2014-2019.
He also served as President of the organisation from 2002-2010 and was recognised as a life member in 2012.
Roads Australia’s Technical Excellence Award is also named in his honour.
Although Fisher was the only person to receive an OAM for services to the transport industry, Michael Byrne, David Stuart-Watt and the late Dr Daryll Hull were all awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (AM) for their services to transport.
Byrne has held a variety of executive roles across Australia’s broader transport sector, including CEO of Linfox from 2006-2014, Managing Director and COO of Toll Group from 2017-2020, and CEO of Coates from 2014-2016.
He has also been a sponsor of the Wayfinder program since 2017, was a Non-Executive Director of Australia Post from 2015-2016 and has held a Non-Executive Director role with NSW Ports since 2020.
Stuart-Watt was recognised for his service to civil infrastructure and road transport and, like Fisher, has been heavily involved with Roads Australia among a litany of other organisations.
Stuart-Watt succeeded Fisher as Roads Australia President in 2010 and held the position until 2019, and held a variety of roles with the New South Wales Road and Traffic Authority including its Director of Licensing, Registration and Freight from 1995-2009.
Dr Hull was awarded the AM for service to the transport industry and tertiary education.
He was Chair of Transport and Logistics Centre from 2001-2021, and Chaired the Workforce Skills and Training Reference Group, Coastal Shipping Reform in the Department of Infrastructure and Transport in 2010.
He also held the role of Executive Chair at the Transport Education Audit Compliance Health Organisation (TEACHO), and was a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, and Global Labor Organization.
He was also involved with Macquarie University, the University of NSW, the University of New England, and was a Life Member of the Oxford Union Society.
