Transport for NSW installs red-light speed camera in Rozelle

It’s been a busy time for Rozelle, with a new red-light speed camera joining the newly opened interchange

Transport for NSW has announced that a new redlight speed camera has been installed at the intersection of Victoria Road and Darling Street in Rozelle.

Transport for NSW deputy secretary Sally Webb says the new camera will target red-light running and speeding from December 18 to improve safety for all road users.

“We know that running red lights can lead to serious T-bone crashes or vehicles hitting pedestrians,” Webb says.

“About 40 per cent of redlight speed camera offences are from people running red lights, so we are addressing this problem head-on.

Transport for NSW says 14 crashes have occurred at the intersection between 2018 and 2022, with nine people injured but none seriously injured in those crashes.

Transport for NSW says its own data shows that there’s a higher level of non-compliance at these traffic signals.

“Road crashes have claimed 334 lives this year, with speed the biggest killer. These redlight speed cameras will help to reduce risk in Rozelle,” Webb says.

Research shows that redlight speed cameras dramatically reduce the number of serious crashes on roads.

“The most recent speed camera review found fatal and serious injury crashes fell by 38 per cent at redlight speed camera locations, and pedestrian casualties fell by almost 66 per cent,” Webb says.

Transport for NSW says the camera will initially operate in warning mode for the first month. During this period drivers caught speeding or running red lights will be sent a warning letter to encourage them to change their behaviour.

Fines and demerit points will then be sent out to the offending drivers at the end of this period.

Transport for NSW says that fines from redlight speed cameras go directly into the Community Road Safety Fund to deliver targeted road safety initiatives in NSW.
