Transport for NSW extends partnership with sporting powerhouse

The Sydney Swans and Transport for NSW have extended their partnership, with the new deal also involving the club’s women’s side

Transport for NSW has renewed its partnership with AFL side the Sydney Swans to continue to promote road safety to the state’s wider public.

This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the partnership between TfNSW and the Swans, with star players Isaac Heeney, Nick Blakey, Logan McDonald and Cynthia Hamilton recently leading a skills session for students aged 15-17, during which a number of key road safety challenges were highlighted.

Executive Director of Transport Safety for Transport for NSW Chadi Chalhoub says the renewal of the partnership comes at a key time heading into the holiday period.

“The partnership renewal with the Sydney Swans comes at a crucial time as the holiday season approaches, with increased travel as people visit family and friends.

“It’s also when many young drivers get the chance to log hours behind the wheel for the first time.

“Road crashes have claimed the lives of 321 people in NSW so far this year (as of 11 December 2024) – two more than the same time last year.

“With the holiday season fast approaching, we urge everyone to take extra care on the roads. Let’s all do our part to ensure this festive season is filled with joy, not tragedy.”

AFLW player Hamilton’s involvement in the recent skills session also marked another key point in the relationship between the two organisations, with the partnership set to involve Sydney’s women’s side.

“We’re proud to have the women’s team now join the effort, influencing both the current and future generations of road users in Sydney.”

The Swans organisation has lent its hand to a number of road safety campaigns including ‘Get Your Hand Off It’ and ‘Don’t Fly Blind’.

Sydney Swans CEO and former AFL premiership captain Tom Harley says the partnership with Transport for NSW is an opportunity for the club to positively use its status as role models.

“We know our members, fans and the broader community look to us as role models, and through this partnership we have the unique opportunity to influence safe driving behaviours across NSW.

“Together, we aim to make a lasting impact on road safety by reaching out to all generations of drivers, inspiring them to make safer choices behind the wheel.”

Sydney’s AFL side will enter next season off the back of a Grand Final loss to the Brisbane Lions, while its AFLW side finished 15th on the ladder in the most recent campaign.
