The Queensland transport industry will have to wait for the findings of a broad review of vocational education and training (VET) before the fate of the Transform initiative becomes plain.

That is the message from Education, Training and Employment Minister John-Paul Langbroek.

Concern for its future rose after transport authorities advised that Transform would tackle no new programs in the next 12 months pending a review.

“Skills Queensland has a contract in place with the Department of Transport and Main Roads to act as the transport and logistics industry skills body in Queensland until 30 June 2013,” Langbroek tells ATN.

“Future industry skills advisory arrangements in Queensland, including those for the transport and logistics industries, will be informed by the outcomes of the Skills and Training Taskforce, which is currently reviewing the vocational education and training sector in Queensland.

“The Newman Government is committed to building an industry-engaged VET sector in Queensland which allows for effective engagement with industry.”

The taskforce was unveiled on June 19 with a brief to “examine the role and function of all statutory bodies that contribute to the VET sector” to ensure they are “aligned and fulfil their role in meeting the state’s economic and employment objectives”.

Along with looking at TAFE performance, the taskforce will also examine the” impact of current regulatory frameworks and ‘red tape’ in terms of the barriers created for employers wishing to hire new apprentices and trainees”.

None of its 12 members are part of the transport industry and the taskforce is due to report by the end of the year.

Submissions to the review are sought by September 7.
