Traffic lights will soon be erected at a notorious intersection in Melbourne’s west, making the crossing safer for the 2,500 trucks and 700 cyclists that use it every day.
VicRoads has been working with Maribyrnong Council to improve Whitehall and Parker streets in Footscray as more than 10,000 vehicles pass through the intersection each day.
VicRoads Metro North West Acting Regional Director Sebastian Motta says the intersection forms part of the principal bicycle network.
“There is a history of crashes and there are high traffic volumes,” Motta says.
“Twelve crashes have been recorded at the intersection in the five years through to the end of 2012.”
