Traffic delays in Queensland as highway upgrades begin

Road users told to expect traffic delays on Queensland’s south-western highway network due to flood reconstruction works

October 7, 2013

Road users are being told to expect traffic delays on Queensland’s south-western highway network until early 2014 due to flood reconstruction works.

Projects will start this month on the Cunningham, Moonie and Leichhardt highways that will lead to delays of up to five minutes at each work site.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads says the road work will have multiple short-term work sites and that motorists need to be on the lookout for traffic queues and to drive to the changed traffic conditions.

The department says operators of oversized vehicles need to check for appropriate travel conditions before starting their journey.

Works on the Cunningham Highway to deliver almost 9km of repairs began in August and will continue until early 2014. Transport and Main Roads says further works will begin early this month between Warwick and Inglewood and Inglewood to Goondiwindi.

“Works on the Leichhardt Highway will begin in early October 2013. Goondiwindi Regional Council will carry out repairs at the intersection with the Gore Highway, in the Goondiwindi town area, and between Goondiwindi and Moonie,” Transport and Main Roads says.

“On the Moonie Highway repairs to culverts and floodways between Dalby and Moonie will also begin in early October 2013.”

The road works are being delivrde through Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements, under which the Federal Government provides 75 per cent of the funding, with 25 per cent from the Queensland Government.
