Tracksafe praises level crossing initiatives

Level crossing safety initiatives across New South Wales and Victoria have received the thumbs up from Tracksafe

Level crossing safety initiatives across New South Wales and Victoria have received the thumbs up from Tracksafe.

The not-for-profit organisation, established last year to reduce collisions and injuries on the rail network, has praised Transport for NSW and V/Line for taking a proactive approach to reducing incidents at crossings.

Tracksafe Director Bryan Nye says temporary pearly gates erected at crossings in regional NSW, including at Orange and Tamworth, are a visual reminder for motorists and pedestrians to take care around crossings.

He says the campaign is attention-grabbing and puts a spotlight on the importance of obeying rules at level crossings.

V/Line’s ‘Don’t push your X-ing luck’ campaign in Victoria has been commended for its focus on safe behaviour around level crossings and the penalties incurred when the rules are broken.

Nye says government and industry must remain vigilant on safety at level crossings.

“Australia’s rail network is the sixth largest in the world, with 44,000km of track and 23,500 level crossings across the network. Railway level crossings safety remains one of the industry’s highest safety priorities,” he says.

Tracksafe intends on maintaining the strong focus on the issue when it’s annual Rail Safety Week event kicks off on August 12.
