TR Group releases second annual ESG report

Truck rental and leasing company TR Group is holding itself accountable to its environmental, social and governance targets

TR Group has released its second annual Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report, which discusses the company’s measurable actions to make a positive difference to its team, the communities it serves, its industry and the environment.

The truck and trailer leasing and rental company has over 30 years of experience specialising in heavy commercial vehicle leasing and renting in New Zealand, and recently expanded its operations to Australia.

Key to this year’s ESG report is the expansion of TR Group’s zero-emission fleet from three trucks to 55 total trucks over the 12-month period, despite facing a number of challenges to bolster its renewable fleet.

As of June 30th 2024, TR’s fleet of 44 BEVs across both its rental and lease fleets had travelled in excess of one million kilometres – all without using a single drop of diesel.

The company is also expecting the delivery of a further 20 hydrogen fuel cell trucks during 2025 following the immense success of its first vehicle in 2023.

This addition of more hydrogen-powered vehicles has come in the face of the immense challenge of the original OEM, Hyzon, disbanding its Australian operations in favour of refocusing on its North American objectives.

While the technology associated with electric and hydrogen trucks continues to progress, TR Group also took delivery of over 270 Euro 6 standard diesel trucks, which produce over 80 per cent less pollutants than Euro 3 equivalents.

“We have set an overarching goal of achieving net scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040,” TR Group says. “We have not set any scope 3 emission reduction goals yet as we acknowledge the time frame for the transition towards greener transport is dependent on both the speed of technological change and the speed with which manufacturers can achieve the economies of scale needed to become commercially viable for transport operators.

“Our total scope 1 and 2 emissions for FY24 have increased from FY23 largely due to our team travelling more using our company vehicle fleet. Over time, we expect these emissions to reduce as we replace more of our fleet with low emission vehicles.”

TR Group also continued its partnership with charitable organisation I AM HOPE, which promotes positive attitudinal, societal change in schools and communities, and to fund private care and counselling for young people.

‘Mack the Hopeful Black Dog’ also continued journey through TR Group’s operations. The truck and trailer was built in collaboration with I AM HOPE to raise awareness about mental health in the community.

The iconic Mack bulldog hood ornament is also black as a nod to depression often being referred to as ‘The Black Dog’.

“Mack is TR’s way of encouraging each other to ask ‘have you checked on your mates today?’ to raise awareness in the community and let people of all ages and backgrounds know they are not alone, there is always support, and there is always hope,” TR Group says.

TR Group also operates ‘The Safety MAN’ truck to raise awareness about improving truck driver health, and has raised funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation and Variety Australia, while supporting a number of charitable organisations and events across Australia and New Zealand.
