Will Townsville road upgrades fix key bottlenecks?

Major Townsville road upgrades have been completed, improving freight efficiency, safety and capacity along one of North Queensland’s busiest corridors.

A major package of Townsville road upgrades has been completed, delivering increased capacity and improved safety along a key freight and commuter corridor in North Queensland.

The upgrades to Stuart Drive and the duplication of the Bowen Road Bridge mark a significant milestone for the Townsville Connection Road, a route used heavily by both local traffic and freight operators.

Together, the works are designed to address congestion, improve reliability and support future growth across the region.

What do the Townsville road upgrades deliver?

The project includes widening Stuart Drive from two lanes to four between University Road and the Bowen Road Bridge, along with upgrades to key intersections.

The duplication of the Bowen Road Bridge has also doubled capacity across the Ross River, separating inbound and outbound traffic flows.

These improvements are expected to support around 24,000 vehicles per day, easing pressure on a long-standing bottleneck.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said the upgrades are part of a broader effort to strengthen the state’s transport network.

“These projects are part of our plan to build the infrastructure Queenslanders need for a safer, more reliable road network,” Mickelberg said.

Why are these upgrades important for freight?

The Townsville road upgrades directly improve freight movement along a corridor that connects key industrial, residential and commercial areas.

By increasing lane capacity and reducing congestion, the upgrades enable more consistent travel times for heavy vehicles.

Improved intersection design and traffic separation also reduce the risk of incidents that can disrupt freight flows.

Member for Mundingburra Janelle Poole said the project reflects strong local demand for safer roads.

“Stuart Drive is an essential link for schools, sports clubs, local businesses and families,” Poole said.

“These upgrades prove the government is committed to easing congestion and improving safety for the community and freight operators who rely on the route each day.”
