Townsville’s port access road opened to traffic yesterday after four years of construction.

Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese says about 500 trucks are expected to use the designated heavy traffic route each day.

“As a designated heavy vehicle route, this new road will provide trucks and road trains access to the port 24 hours a day, seven days a week, without the need for permits or trundling through residential streets,” Albanese says.

The direct link to the port is intended to improve freight efficiency, boost
local agricultural productivity and resources industries, and support the region’s economic development.

The
Douglas Arterial Duplication
was also
completed in the past year.

The Federal Government contributed $95 million to the $217 million Townsville Port Access Road, with the Queensland Government funding the remaining $122 million.
