TNT opens Queensland freight depot

Surge in mining activity and online retail sales prompts TNT Express to open new freight facility in Brisbane

December 13, 2012

A surge in mining activity and online retail sales has prompted TNT Express to open a new freight facility at Eagle Farm in Brisbane.

The 5,000sqm depot has a fully automated parcel sortation system for domestic and international freight. It has the capacity to scan and sort 3,500 parcels an hour.

TNT Express Australia Managing Director Bob Black says the new Brisbane depot was constructed to support the growing demand for freight movement in Queensland.

“Prior to opening TNT Express Brisbane North, the smaller depots’ capacities were often exceeded,” Black says.

“We attribute the significant increase in freight passing through our depot to Australia’s current economic drivers, which we view as the mining and online retail industries.”

Black says TNT has also noticed a particular surge in international and priority freight heading to Papua New Guinea.

The new Brisbane depot has a fleet of over 50 vehicles and 185 operations and customer service staff, the latter working from the facility’s two-storey, 730sqm office block.

Specifically designed to reduce power use, water consumption and waste disposal requirements, the facility has sub-metered air conditioning and translucent roof sheeting for each bay in the warehouse to reduce the need for electric lighting.
