The Transport & Logistics Industry Skills Council says a landmark report into vocational education and training will pave the way for reform
The Transport & Logistics Industry Skills Council (TLIS) says a landmark report into Vocational Education and training (VET) will pave the way to reform.
The ‘Skills for Prosperity: A Roadmap for Vocational Education and Training’ report released by Skills Australia is a comprehensive, national review of the Australian VET system.
The report recommends a series of reforms designed to produce a more flexible and market-oriented education and training system, capable of addressing projected skills shortages.
The report examines how the Australian VET sector can be best developed, organised and financed to support higher level skills and improved workforce participation.
It identifies nine broad themes for the evolution and reinvigoration of the VET sector offering suggested directions to help achieve this change.
Suggested initiatives include a 3 percent per annum increase in funding to an average $310 million each year; simplification of the VET system; regulation of apprenticeships and traineeships by the Commonwealth.
The report also
suggests the creation of an industry-led ‘Enterprise Skills Investment Fund’.
TLISC Interim CEO Robyn Stepnell says the review highlights many areas of potential improvement in the VET sector.
“We agree an extensive overhaul to the system would have great benefits for Australian industry, workers and the economy as a whole,” Stepnell says
“Australia’s future growth and prosperity is going to involve its ability to raise its productivity through the skills development of the workforce.
“The Transport & Logistics Industry Skills Council looks forward to engaging with industry and government on these proposed sector reforms.”
