Work on the first stage of 10km Bringelly Road upgrade could begin by end of 2014.
Construction on an upgrade to a key route in western Sydney could begin by the end of this year.
The Federal and New South Wales governments have invited tenders to build the first stage of the 10km upgrade of Bringelly Road. Tenders are now invited until August 13.
NSW roads minister Duncan Gay says the first stage a 5.7km upgrade between Camden Valley Way at Leppington and King Street Rossmore could start at the end of 2014.
“The upgrade will be carried out in two stages and provide two lanes in each direction with three lanes to be installed each way between Upper Canal and Eastwood roads,” Gay says.
“Stage one building work is expected to be completed in 2017. Stage two building work is expected to start early 2016 and be completed in 2018.”
Stage two is a 4.3km route from King Street to the Northern Road at Bringelly. NSW awarded the $2.1 million design contract to URS Australia in May.
NSW and the Federal Government have committed $500 million to upgrade Bringelly Road to cut travel times in the south west growth centre and improve access for the future Western Sydney Airport.
The Bringelly Road upgrade is part of a plan to pump $3.5 billion into road infrastructure projects in western Sydney.
Projects include upgrading 31km of the Northern Road to four lanes from Narellan to the M4 Motorway, building a new 14km motorway from the M7 Motorway and the Northern Road and funding improvements to local roads.
“Design tenders are also expected to be invited for the 11km stage two of the Northern Road from Peter Brock Drive to Mersey Road in the coming months,” Gay says.
