Taking action to reduce workplace road deaths

With almost 40 per cent of worker lives lost in Australia during 2023 occurring on our roads, actions must be taken to mitigate risks

Damning national work and road safety statistics have been released by the South Australian government as part of its new workplace road safety guide, with almost 40 per cent of worker lives lost nationally in 2023 coming on Australia’s roads.

Road deaths account for 75 of the 200 worker lives lost in Australia last year, while they accounted for 36 of the 73 work-related deaths in South Australia from 2019-2023.

11 of the 17 lives lost in South Australia in 2023 also came on the road.

The new workplace road safety guide, titled A guide for employers and workers defines a host of recommendations for individuals at all levels of the chain of responsibility to follow to minimise the risk of worker road deaths.

A pre-driving checklist and workplace road safety policy template are included in the document, as is a guide to map a clear reporting structure from the top down in an organisation.

Zero tolerance for not wearing seatbelts, making speed a disciplinary issue, eliminating mobile phone use and a no alcohol during work hours policy are also recommended.

The initiative forms part of South Australia’s Road Action Safety Plan 2023-2025 and is available to access here.
