An Australian report criticises the country’s smart mobility transport movements
A final report handed down by iMove Australia says the nation’s transport sector is falling behind international trends when it comes to transport digitisation.
The report is part of iMove’s Digitisation in transport and freight: Lessons for Australia project which is run with the department of infrastructure and transport, as well as Swinburne University.
The project aimed to review Australia’s transport and freight sector relating to network performance, efficiency and productivity.
In the report, rankings found that Australia has “clearly fallen behind international trends in transport digitisation”, according to iMove.
To improve Australia’s transport and freight sector, the report made recommendations for future operations.
This included developing a national vision for smart mobility, setting new policies for smart mobility and aligning digital transport initiatives with national development strategies.

The iMove report also suggested supporting transactional research, investing in backbone digitisation infrastructure and investing in learning and capacity building across all sectors.
Furthermore, other recommendations included undertaking feasibility studies of state-wide integrated smart mobility operations centres and developing agreed standards to improve data benefits.
The iMove report says more research is needed to identify data gaps in the sector, as well as developing smart mobility research agendas to enhance Australia’s transport and freight industry going forward.
