Springvale Road project to ease congestion

Another section of the Springvale Road project to ease traffic congestion as been completed

The Victorian Government’s push to reduce traffic congestion on a busy Melbourne route is a step closer.

The $159 million upgrade to the Springvale Road level crossing will remove the crossing and allow trains to pass underneath the route without stopping traffic.

Workers renewed 150 metres of track at the weekend, installed new overhead gantries and began work on the platform for the new station.

The project, which Victorian Roads Minister Terry Mulder says will improve transport efficiency, is expected to be completed late this year.

“Springvale Road carries 25,000 vehicles per day, and this project is going to go a long way to ensuring that the time drivers spend waiting while boom gates are closed is wiped out altogether,” Victorian Roads Minister Terry Mulder says.

“We currently see 450 trains per day travel through the crossing, and we need to make sure that we are doing what we can to protect the safety of road users, rail users and pedestrians.”
