UNLOCKING PRODUCTIVITY REFORMS WITH SMART OBM SYSTEMS

Greater productivity is within operators grasp through TCA approval

Better access is available

Larger, heavier and more productive vehicles can now get better access to the road network, thanks to the growing availability of Smart On-board Mass (OBM) systems that Transport Certification Australia (TCA) has type-approved.

Road managers are using Smart OBM to introduce new access arrangements that are unlocking major productivity improvements by expanding available road networks.

Tasmania and Victoria have already introduced productivity reforms that rely on Smart OBM.

In Victoria, Smart OBM is opening up improved productivity for High Productivity Freight Vehicle (HPFV) in Victoria.

Meanwhile, in Tasmania, Smart OBM in road access arrangements is specific to Performance-Based Standards (PBS) vehicles in Tasmania.

Arrangements are currently underway in other jurisdictions to use Smart OBM for productivity reforms.

With TCA type-approval, all Smart OBM systems are recognised nationwide, regardless of where vehicles are used – find out more from TCA’s comprehensive information site on Smart OBM systems.

But with the introduction of Smart OBM systems, some ‘myths’ have arisen, so let’s bust some of them now:

Myth #1

All OBM systems are equal.

Fact #1

Check that Smart OBM systems are type-approved by TCA by visiting TCA’s website at tca.gov.au/type-approved-obm.

Existing OBM systems may be upgradable to Smart OBM. Speak to your supplier or TCA to find out more.

Myth #2

TCA prescribes six-monthly calibrations for Smart OBM systems.

Fact #2

The frequency of calibration is determined by OBM suppliers, not TCA.

TCA recognises the recommended calibration frequency from the supplier through type-approval.

Myth #3

Smart OBM systems can’t be used if Interim OBM is a condition of access.

Fact #3

Because Smart OBM systems exceed the performance requirements of Interim OBM, they can be used where Interim OBM is a condition.
