A significant milestone has been reached in the construction of NSW’s Singleton Bypass, with first sod being turned on the $700 million project.
Weather permitting the bypass will open in late 2026 and will remove 15,000 vehicles from Singleton’s CBD and clear one of the state’s worst regional bottlenecks.
It means motorists will avoid five sets of traffic lights to save time on their journeys and improve safety outcomes for road-users and pedestrians through Singleton.
“Today, we’re marking a major milestone for the Hunter as construction on the new bypass begins,” NSW Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley says.
“This project will soon make travel safer, faster and more efficient for everyone.
“Starting construction on the bypass is one of the ways the NSW government is delivering top-quality services to regional areas, making sure our communities have access to the best infrastructure possible.
“With this new bypass we’re connecting people across NSW.”
Contractor ACCIONA Constructions Australia had been finalising the design of the project ahead of major work starting, which will include the installation of six bridges and a northbound climbing lane.
Additional investigations and engagement with the community refined the design to modify the southern connection and reconfiguring the Putty Road interchange to improve functionality and safety.
Labor Spokesperson for the Upper Hunter electorate Emily Suvaal congratulated all parties for their work on the project so far.
“The teams from the contractor, ACCIONA Constructions, and Transport for NSW deserve a pat on the back for all their hard work getting ready to deliver the biggest road project in Singleton history,” Suvaal says.
“The Singleton Bypass is long overdue and will bring much relief to long suffering motorists in the Upper Hunter.”
