Sense-T NICTA facility initiative worth to focus on IT and analytics
The$2 million Sense-T NICTA Smart Logistics Lab is up and running officially at the University of Tasmania.
The facility aims to research sensor technology and data analytics to improve productivity in freight, logistics and supply chains in Tasmania, particularly sensors that can be embedded in packaging to track food throughout a supply chain, recording real-time data on factors vital to food stability.
It was jointly funded by $1 million contributions from the Australian Government and National ICT Australia.
Amanda Castray acting director of Sense-T – a partnership between the university, CSIRO and the Tasmanian Government that is also funded by the Australian Government – says it will “soon be making announcements about the Tasmanian organisations we’ll be working with, and the practical research we’ll be doing in transport logistics over the coming months”.
The organisation works with engineering technology commercialisation company Grey Innovation, itself linked to the non-profit Verde Foundation research group, to investigate the establishment of an advanced electronics manufacturing facility in Hobart.
The facility would collaborate with industry and researchers to fast track the commercialisation of new sensor technology, Sense-T says.
