Small transporters pass up training opportunities

Cost concerns are holding back small transporters from taking advantage of training opportunities to boost the skills of their employees

Small transport companies are passing up opportunities to boost the skills of their employees for fear of the cost it will impose on their operation, a training and consultancy organisation claims.

JKR Training for Business CEO Joanne Rowe believes many senior and regional operators forego training programs that come with Federal Government assistance.

Rowe started JKR Training with her husband and former TNT Express executive, Paul, 10 years ago.

“The older managers or people who have come through from the ground up are worried that their work will be impacted if they sing up for [a] traineeship and it will cost them money having people off the road,” Rowe says.

“What we say to them is that the money that you invest in training will actually increase your productivity.”

Rowe also believes many operators have difficulty understanding chain of responsibility laws.

“There is absolute major emphasis on the implementation of the chain of responsibility legislation that all transport operators must be fully aware of,” she says.

“I fear that a lot of smaller operators don’t comprehend the full extent of the legislation and its impact on their business.”

JKR is currently working with Power’s Country Express. The Bendigo-based transporter won the Investment in People Award at this year’s Victorian Transport Association’s Australian Freight Industry Awards.
